Advanced Quantum Physics 2008/9

  Professor David Ritchie

This 24 lecture course will be given during the Michaelmas term on MWTh at 9am in the Pippard lecture theatre.

It relies on much of the material covered in the 1B Quantum Physics course and some of the material in the 1B Condensed Matter Physics course.

It is divided into 6 sections:

  1. Review of Quantum Physics
  2. Methods of Approximation
  3. Relativity and Magnetic fields
  4. Transitions
  5. Atoms
  6. Quantum information

For 2008-9 the examination will be based on sections 1-5, i.e. quantum information is not examinable.

Lecture overheads will be available in printed form prior to the lectures and posted below in pdf after each lecture.

A set of printed examples for supervisions will be posted below in pdf. The solutions will be posted at the end of the course.

Note that spare printed handouts will be available from a filing cabinet outside the Pippard lecture theatre.

Please e-mail any corrections/comments/questions to Professor David Ritchie: dar11@cam.ac.uk

Corrections to the printed handouts and comments about the lectures.

Some of the material in this course is based on the QMII course given by Prof. David Ward, the TP2 course given by Prof. Brian Webber and the Lasers, Atoms and Light course given by Prof. Richard Phillips.
